Vandalising Abattoirs

Vandalizing Abattoirs
The abattoir who purchased Brumbies sold at Camden Sale Yards (NSW) in July 2010 was vandalized, their equipment and power damaged and Brumbies exposed to chemicals that prevented their meat being fit for pet food for 28 days. The ABA is against the use of any unlawful behaviour, such this.

It is a fact that our society requires abattoirs to kill and process animals for human consumption, or for pet food.  Provided animals are treated in the most humane way possible, ABA accepts that this is one outcome of the control of over abundant wild horses.  ABA is actively pursuing policies and programs that we hope in future will reduce the need for sending wild horses to abattoirs,  particularly as most abattoirs that will take horses require long transport distances that adds significant stress to the horses.

The ABA also objects strongly to any brumby being exposed to unnecessary stress, fear, and poisons by anyone, especially those claiming to ‘help the brumby cause’. Do the vandals realize that they only prolong the brumbies pain & suffering by their actions. Those brumbies were spooked enough without further loud bangs at night close by, worse still, they risk existing in cramped conditions for 28 days before being killed. The kindest action for brumbies arriving at an abattoir is to be humanely killed as soon as possible to end the fear & torment they have just experienced.

Brumbies rescued at the abattoir may in time overcome their severe trauma, but during time taken for that brumby to be gentled and sold another 10 could have been saved. The ABA’s preferred approach to relocating Brumbies lawful removed by PASSIVE trapping from National Parks - is to form a rehoming charity group with sufficient experience to gentle and sell on these magnificent animals, then negotiate with Park staff to collect the brumbies direct from them, BEFORE they have been traumatized by handling, trucking etc. For information on establishing a Brumby Rehoming charity please visit our website www.australianbrumbyalliance.org.au
