Save the Brumbies Inc (STB) was founded in 2002 by Jan Carter following the October 2000 aerial kill of 600 brumbies in the Guy Fawkes River National Park. |

| A professional musician for 35 years, Jan wrote, performed and produced a CD, “Run with the Wind” to raise money for the remaining Guy Fawkes brumbies and this became the beginning of a passionate journey. STB is now a registered animal welfare charity that runs two brumby sanctuaries, the 1400 acre New England Brumby Sanctuary (NEBS) near Armidale NSW and the smaller Mt Thyme Sanctuary near Bellingen, NSW | |
|
For historic and practical reasons, STB focuses on re-homing brumbies from the Guy Fawkes area, however, the group actively advocates for brumbies across Australia. Horses that are passively trapped by NSW National Parks are transported to NEBS where they are assessed and cared for until adopted by the public. Because of age, injury or temperament, some horses are kept on the sanctuary permanently and a limited number of stallions and mares are kept to continue representative bloodlines. Those in need of special care are transported to the Mt Thyme sanctuary where they are kept under a sponsorship program.

STB volunteers assist with open days, working bees, fundraising and publicity. People with special skills may help with horse handling and training. A Resident Manager, Lisa Burgess, operates the day to day management of NEBS and is the head horse handler for the group. STB relies on adoption fees, sponsorship of horses, and donations for funds. A quarterly newsletter is sent to Friends of Save the Brumbies and the website is a vital vehicle to provide information on animal welfare issues, adoptions and sponsorship.
