Petition to Stop Quota Contract Brumby Running in the Alpine National Park

Brumbies have been historically caught for stockwork/riding by high countriy families. We have no issue with this, in fact, we value this link with our heritage.

However the ABA condems Parks Victoria ongoing contract with the Alpine Brumby Management Association (ABMA) to rope Alpine Brumbies. The ABMA’s annual target of 200 Brumbies makes their stewardship of these brumbies very different from that of the High Country family who has caught one Brumby for personal use. Why should tax  payers subsidise Brumby Running, a sport that is banned throughout Victoria and NSW. The ABMA say they needs dogs to flush Brumbies from the Alpine bush, so though dogs are banned, Parks Victoria created a ‘dog permit’ for ABMA use. Animal welfare codes of practice require ‘the most humane’ method to be used. The RSPCA Australian Animal Charter condemms Brumby running as inhumane. Parks Victoria response to the ABA is that ABMA arrangement will continue.

We believe that passive trapping, using salt or other bait to lure Brumbies into traps is the best available method for capturing Brumbies and most efficient and economical way for Parks Victoria to achieve its stated objectives under the Greater Alpine Parks Management Plan.

We also encourage Parks Victoria to trial PZP, a treatment which affects the fertility of Brumbies without altering their natural behaviour.

The Victorian Brumby Association have posted further information on capture, including Brumby Running on their site, go to ABA Info Sheets or click here to view.
