ABA apalled at Queensland Government's continued reliance on aerial shooting of brumbies
Following an article on the Courier Mail (1 April 2011), ABA President Jill Pickering wrote to the Qld Minister for Environment and Resource Management Kate Jones to voice "extreme concern that the Qld Government continues to rely on aerial shoootiing to control wild horse numbers when alternive, more humane methods exist..."
The Courier Sun reported that a further 400 horses will be shot in the Carnavon National Park. It appears to the ABA that the Queensland Government has not made any serious attempts to control brumby numbers by alternative means. We understand that no calls for tender of removal of horses has been made since 2009 when a tender was sought with limited publicity. No attempts to investigate fertility control, even on a trial basis, has been made.
We seem to still be stuck in the cycle of shoot, do nothing and shoot again.
